How to Install 1m x 1m x 15mm Gym Rubber Flooring Tiles (Step-by-Step Guide)

Installing rubber gym flooring is one of the most important steps in building a safe, durable, and professional-looking training space. Whether you’re setting up a home gym, a commercial facility, or upgrading an existing space, 1m x 1m x 15mm rubber tiles are one of the most practical and popular options.

Why Choose 15mm Rubber Tiles?

15mm rubber tiles are ideal for:

  • Home gyms and PT studios
  • Light to moderate commercial use
  • General strength training and functional fitness

Key benefits:

  • Shock absorption for joints and equipment
  • Protection for concrete subfloors
  • Noise and vibration reduction
  • Easy installation and replacement

Tools & Materials You’ll Need

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • 1m x 1m x 15mm rubber tiles
  • Tape measure
  • Chalk line or marker
  • Straight edge or ruler
  • Sharp utility knife (heavy-duty)
  • Rubber mallet
  • Broom or vacuum

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

Your foundation determines how well your flooring performs.

Checklist:

  • Surface must be clean (no dust, debris, or oil)
  • Completely dry
  • As level as possible

If installing on concrete (most common in garages and commercial gyms), you’re already in a good position. Minor imperfections are fine, but large dips or cracks should be addressed first.

Step 2: Plan Your Layout

Before laying tiles, map out your space.

Best practice:

  • Start from a straight wall or central point
  • Use a chalk line to create a straight reference line

Step 3: Lay the First Row

The first row sets the tone for the entire install.

  • Place tiles along your reference line
  • Ensure edges are tight with no gaps
  • Double-check alignment before continuing

Tip: If the first row is off, the entire floor will be affected—take your time here

Step 4: Continue Laying Tiles

Work row by row across the space.

  • Push tiles firmly together
  • Use a rubber mallet if needed to close gaps
  • Stagger joints slightly if required for a better fit

Most 15mm tiles are heavy enough that they stay in place without adhesive, especially in enclosed spaces.

Step 5: Cutting Tiles to Fit Edges

You’ll likely need to trim tiles along walls or corners.

How to cut:

  • Measure the gap carefully
  • Mark the tile clearly
  • Use a straight edge and a sharp knife
  • Score multiple times rather than forcing one deep cut

Step 6: Optional, Adhesive (If Required)

Most gyms do not require adhesive.

However, glue or a strong double-sided tape may be recommended if:

  • The tiles end at a large opening with nothing holding them in place
  • The area is subject to significant daily temperature fluctuations, causing the rubber mats to shrink and expand rapidly.

If gluing:

  • Use the adhesive recommended for rubber flooring
  • Apply evenly and follow the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Our favourite option is Tuff Turf double-sided tape for rubber flooring, which can be applied sparingly at perimeter edges.

Step 7: Final Check & Clean

Once all tiles are installed:

  • Check for gaps or uneven areas
  • Walk the floor to ensure stability
  • Clean off any dust or residue

Your gym floor is now ready for equipment installation.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not preparing the subfloor properly
  • Rushing the first row
  • Leaving gaps between tiles
  • Using blunt blades when cutting
  • Overusing adhesive when it’s not needed

KINTA Recommendation

For most customers, a floating installation (no glue) with tight-fitting 15mm tiles works perfectly in all commercial gyms and home gyms..

If you want your floor to be easy to clean and last a long time in a commercial environment, then we recommend the option for composite gym flooring rather than regular 15mm rubber gym flooring, as the higher-density composite top layer has a smoother finish, allowing for easier cleaning and lasting longer in high-volume traffic areas.

The installation process remains the same.

Final Thoughts

Installing 1m x 1m x 15mm rubber gym tiles is straightforward when done correctly. With proper preparation and attention to detail, you’ll end up with a professional, durable flooring system that protects both your equipment and your space.

If you’re unsure about your setup, space, or layout, KINTA can assist with planning, product selection, and full installation services.

General FAQs

Do I need gym flooring?

  • To protect the surface below and your equipment, we recommend gym flooring to reduce the risk of scuff marks on the surface or damage to the equipment.

Which type of gym flooring should I get?

  • If you have a home gym, our 15mm Rubber Gym Flooring is fine. It will provide you with surface protection and mild noise reduction.
  • If you have a commercial facility, 15mm rubber gym flooring will be fine in most cases. However, if customers track dirt through your gym or you have over 500 gym members with significant footfall in certain areas, you may want to consider upgrading to composite rubber flooring for easier cleaning and a longer lifespan.
  • If you have a commercial gym, want the cleanest finish possible, and have a higher budget, then rubber roll flooring offers the cleanest finish. Due to the technicality in installing this flooring and the requirement for adhesive, the final cost will be significantly more than that of rubber tiles.

How do I clean rubber gym flooring?

  • Sweeping or vacuuming can do most of the cleaning if you are using composite flooring or your gym floor doesn’t get too dirty.
  • If you have major cleaning to do with a mop, you should fill a bucket with warm water and pH-neutral cleaner. Anything to acidac can break down the mats slowly over time.
  • Use a microfibre mop. If you use a cheap mob that falls apart, the pieces show up visibly on black rubber flooring when they become dry.
  • Avoid flooding the floor with water. The excess can seep into the seams under the tiles, leading to mould buildup.

Do I need to glue the rubber flooring down?

  • Generally no! In a gym where the flooring extends wall-to-wall on all four sides, they will be locked in place.
  • However, if the tiles end without a solid structure, such as a wall or floor transition, we use a strong double-sided adhesive. Our preferred tape is Tuff Turf Double-Sided tape, which can be picked up at most hardware stores, such as Bunnings.

Why are there gaps in my gym tiles?

  • Gym rubber flooring will shrink and expand slightly with changes in temperature.
  • When installing tiles, ensure they are tightly up against each other before laying the next tile. This will minimise the impact of shrinking and expansion throughout the summer and winter months.

What Thickness tile do I need?

  • In areas where weights are dropped, 15 mm-thick flooring is ok.
  • If there are neighbouring properties next to your gym that don’t like the vibrations of dropped weights, then 30mm flooring might be ideal.
  • If you have dedicated weight-lifting zones for powerlifting or heavy weightlifting, we recommend adding a weight-lifting platform with a minimum of 30mm of rubber on top of your flooring. This will not only reduce the vibrations but also protect the concrete slab.
  • In areas with pin-loaded and plate-loaded machines, we recommend composite rubber flooring or an 8mm thick rubber roll.
