Barbells: How to Choose the Right One

Published on January 10, 2022

When it comes to choosing the right barbell set, there are a few things you need to consider. The first is what type of barbell you need. There are two main types, Olympic and standard. Olympic bars are thicker and have more weight capacity than standard bars. They’re typically used for CrossFit or powerlifting exercises. Standard bars are thinner and lighter and can be used for a variety of exercises, including curls and shoulder presses.

The next thing you need to consider is the size of the barbell sleeves, the part on either end of the bar that holds the weights. Sleeve size will vary depending on the type of barbell you choose. Olympic bars typically have larger sleeves than standard bars. You’ll also want to consider the barbell’s knurling, that’s the crosshatch pattern you see on Olympic bars. It provides a grip for your hands and lets you load or unload weights more easily. Some Olympic bars have no centre knurling, which can make them slightly harder to hold onto when doing Olympic lifts because of their forward weight distribution.

The last thing you need to think about is storage space in your home gym or fitness studio. Olympic barbells are longer than standard ones so they take up more room if stored vertically inside a rack. Standard size bars fit better into racks but obviously require less floor space overall since there’s not as much length involved with vertical storage versus horizontal storage.

This blog post is going to cover everything from finding the right compact storage system for your home gym, choosing between a 16-inch or 17-inch diameter Olympic Barbell set and selecting the best Olympic bar collars from Kinta Fitness.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT BARBELL SET

When you are looking for a barbell set, there are a few things that you need to consider.

  • The first is the weight of the barbell. Most Olympic bars weigh 20 kg, but some can be as light as 15 kg or as heavy as 25 kg. If you are just starting out, it might be best to go with a lighter barbell so that you can easily lift it.
  • The second thing to consider is the length of the barbell. Olympic bars are typically either two or seven feet long. Again, if you are just starting out, it might be better to go with a shorter barbell so that you don’t have too much trouble controlling it.
  • The third consideration is the type of barbell. Olympic bars come in two different types: curl bars and straight bars. Curl bars are designed for exercises like bicep curls, while straight bars are better for exercises like squats and deadlifts.
  • The fourth consideration is the quality of the barbell. Not all barbells are created equal, so you’ll want to make sure that you get a good quality set. One way to do this is to look for a barbell with chrome sleeves. This will help keep the barbell from rusting over time. You’ll also want to make sure that the bar has collars attached so that it doesn’t slip during your workouts.
