How does the friction lock work?
The tongue strap wraps around the turnbuckle and then back onto the velcro pad like a standard velcro weight-lifting belt. However, over time the adhesive properties of the velcro can wear away, causing the velcro tongue to release under load. The friction buckle adds an extra turn in the buckle to create enough friction to take all stressors off the velcro part of the belt, increasing the reliability and life span of the belt by years.
So how does a lifting belt work?
A weight-lifting belt supports the core of the wearer. When muscles brace to lift a heavy object, the intra-abdominal muscles tense and support the bone structure of the spine by creating a hard surface to be fixed against. However, on the exterior wall, muscles have nothing to brace against, causing them to work very hard to maintain rigidity to support the spine. When a weight lifting belt is applied firmly around the torso, it creates an external solid structure to brace against, decreasing the stress on the intra-abdominal muscles by about 40%. This allows the muscles to brace for weights that far exceed their unsupported potential and last significantly longer before fatiguing. Overall, improved athletic performance can be achieved with less effort exerted.
